The Lost City: A Uneven ComRomCom

There’s an observation that the internet makes whenever someone is yelling, trying too hard to be humorous. The saying is ‘loud=funny’, the equation being said in jest. The Lost City doesn’t employ the loud=funny mantra, what it does use, however, is the ever popular ‘awkward=funny’ technique.

Since the inception of the MCU films, the idea of comedy + action being an unending vein to mine until the heat death of the universe, seems to be the modus operandi of every major studio. People acting awkwardly in extremely dangerous scenarios only works, in my mind, when everybody isn’t doing it. There’s a reason why the typical comedic pairing is the comedian and the straight man. If the straight man is also cracking jokes then the formula just doesn’t work.

That’s not to say The Lost City is a total failure. Brad Pitt plays Jack Trainer, a former spec-op Army/Navy Seal or whatever, tasked with collecting Sandra Bullocks Loretta Sage. Jack does what he hired to do, fighting through a dozen or so of ‘bad guys’, with the ‘help’ of Channing Tatums Alan/Dash. One of best bits of the movie is when Alan is trailing behind Jack, punching/slapping the same henchmen that Jack has just handily dispatched. Jack, at one point, comments deadpanned ‘You gotta stop doing that.’

Too many jokes, too many people making jokes, but there is an extended sequence in which Channing Tatum is all but bare ass, getting leeches removed from his nether regions in an odd Stand By Me homage. So there are some redeeming qualities to The Lost City.
